More than six years (1996-present) of RADARSAT data of the Arctic and Southern Oceans have now been acquired and archived at the Alaska SAR Facility. Only a subset of this SAR dataset has been analyzed by the RADARSAT Geophysical Processor System. Our objectives are to continue to produce systematic and exploratory sea ice products using the available high-resolution spatial and temporal SAR coverage and to support their use. The science focus will be on providing the following measurements of the sea ice cover:
- Sea ice motion, deformation, and estimates of seasonal ice thickness of the Arctic Ocean
- Ice area export through various passages out of the Arctic Ocean
- Ice motion and deformation in the Ross and Weddell Seas
- sub-daily ice motion and deformation
These data products are unique and directly support the ESE goals of understanding the changes that are occurring in the mass of the Earth's ice cover. This is a joint project of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Alaska SAR Facility. The proposed work and responsibilities are divided between the two institutions. The facilities and the expertise to handle, process, and distribute the large volumes of SAR are in place and thus ensure cost effectiveness of this undertaking. The community is engaged through annual meetings of a Science Working Group chartered to provide recommendations on the contents of the data products and on data distribution preferences. Participation in the SEEDS Standards and Interfaces Working Group is proposed.
